Today, we went to Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge. I wanted to ride bikes there to see if it would be an appropriate place to take the “Babes in Boats, on Bikes, and wearing Brogues”, the women at LCC who want to take low key adventures. We got to the Refuge to discover that the road through it was gravel, not paved, and that they DIDN’T ALLOW BIKES. That plan bit the dust. But, Bob and I were there, and we had to do SOMETHING.

So, we walked. We saw birds and butterflies. We saw this grey duck that reminded me of the ugly duckling before he swanned. We took a trail across a slough (pronounced “slew”, in case you’re as unfamiliar with the word as I was). The slough was full of green stuff. It looked like dichondra, lots of little round leaves, if you got close enough. We saw a lump of it at the end of something that might have been a board or stick in the water. Upon closer inspection, the lump could have been a frog.

One trail we went on was under cover of trees, and thus cooler and a bit darker. We saw a very small rodent – probably a mouse, but with a really short tail, and a very wiggly nose. Maybe it was a confused mole. And we saw another frog – in the path. And lots of birds, but they didn’t sit still long enough for us to take a picture.

On the way out, Bob saw a muskrat! By the time Bob poked me and I got the camera out, it had swum away. But, as we kept walking, we kept seeing it – poking its head out, swimming away, hiding from us. At the very end, I thougth I got a picture of its head (looking much like a chunk of wood or a boot), but the picture is bad. That’s probably why he let me take it. And then he went underwater, and we saw the trail of bubbles! Just like in Wind in the Willows, all that was left of him was the trail of bubbles indicating he had gone in a direction – and they popped.

All in all, a good day.
