My first Green Heron.
I've read that one hasn't really been out and about unless one has seen a green heron, so I figured they were pretty rare. But I found one, and I was only at Bybee Lake.
Bybee Lake is a wildlife area, but it's right next to an industrial area in Portland. You hear cars, you smell exhaust, there's a train track right there, it's just off the Columbia with the major shipping lane. But there's this wildlife area right there, no pets allowed, and you can see whatever animals decide to frequent the place. I guess birds are not as upset by noises as they are by an invading presence. The heron was across the marsh from me. There were lots of ducks, and some small birds that I don't know (some of the millions of kinds).
After I left Bybee Lake, I went to Kelly Point, which is the park at the confluence of the Willammette and the Columbia. In the winter it's pretty deserted. I didn't see a heron, but it looked pretty unkempt (except there was a paved walk). All told, I probably walked 4 miles, and along one side there was lovely stuff. The other side was way too industrial. Oh well.
Half a loaf is more than I can eat anyway.
