Jay keeps house.

Jay used to be a carefree bachelor, hanging out with his friend Squirrel. They’d steal peanuts from each other, bury them, and pretend it didn’t matter who got them. It was all a lie, one of those bragging fights that jays and squirrels get into. But, then Jay met a girl, and everything changed.

No more nights at the peanut bar. Now there were feathers, and curtains, and “do you think this is soft enough dear”, and coming bringing home the birdseed, a regular sunrise to sundown kind of life. And coming home to the same place every night.

Squirrel really didn’t understand. Yeah, there were girl squirrels, but nothing to spend any time with - and they didn’t lie nearly enough. Jay was reliable - you knew you couldn’t count on him. He’d steal you blind, and that was the way it was.

So, Squirrel started watching where Jay spent his time. He’d come prancing around, and Jay would run him off. So, maybe nothing had changed after all. But then Squirrel started up the nest tree. That was a bit more than Jay could take. He dove at Squirrel, slapped him in th rear. Squirrel started high-tailing it out of there - with Jay slapping at him all the way across the yard. Sometimes Jay would connect, and you’d see Squirrel rise up in the air from the blow. Across the yard, and almost out of sight.

But, really , Squirrel didn’t have any hard feelings. He’d keep coming back to harass Jay and Mrs. Jay. Anything for a friend. And, sometimes he’d even bring a girl to watch while he tried to steal the eggs. After all, nests come and nests go - but Jay and Squirrel - they’ll go on forever.

Comments:
Mom, this is great! Really, I think maybe you're right that you should try to get some stuff published. Somewhere. Does LCC have a newspaper? Or Longview. Or even Vancouver.
